3/14 American Idol Top 12 cover songs from the year they were born; Who were the standouts?

And they’re down to 11!

With Jermaine Jones’ disqualification over concealing a criminal past, American Idol is down to eleven contestants singing songs from their birth year…

STANDOUTS: JOSHUA LEDET!! JOSHUA LEDET!! JOSHUA LEDET!!!

SHOULD GO HOME: Shannon Magrane or Deandre Branckensick

Phillip Phillips – “Hard To Handle” by Black Crowes
Ok this is much better! His best performance so far. WITHOUT THE GUITAR! Yes, please! Use the guitar and the Dave Matthews impersonation sparingly. Thank you… Oh boy, we’re seeing the next American Idol right here- another white boy with guitar. What else is new?!!

Jessica Sanchez – “Turn The Beat Around” by Gloria Estefan
Years and years of being on stage as a child prepared Jessica for this now bigger stage that is Idol. Such confidence from this 16 year old, she can do anything! The judges didn’t stand up to her this week though and didn’t really like her performance. We say, don’t listen to the judges!! You picked just the right song girl. They’re trying to throw you in the bus, don’t allow it.

Heejun Han – “Right Here Waiting” by Richard Marx
No offense meant but in this particular song, his articulation, enunciation of the words shows his Asian side. Not that that is a bad thing but in this song it just didn’t work. Heejun is in the middle of the pack right now and he’s not going home until the weaker ones are eliminated one by one first…

Elise Testone – “Let’s Stay Together” by Al Greene (Tina Turner cover)
Elise finally gets it! People respond better to happy, smiley people! People with a positive energy and vibe not those who project a mean, discouraged, anxious look she’s been carrying around – especially evident in last week’s performance and while being critiqued by the judges. Great job tonight!

Deandre Branckensick – “Endless Love” Lionel Richie
This is just weird. Why would you attempt to do a solo for such an iconic duet song?! Changing the melody in all the wrong places doesn’t work either! Doesn’t work. He’s the weakest of the guys.

Shannon Magrane – “One Sweet Day” by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men
Shannon NEEDS to go home. That is all. If we go on, we might write things such as awful, desperate, trying hard. So we will stop.

Colton Dixon – “Broken Heart” by White Lion
Colton is the total package. Our issue now is he’s trying to be a rockstar but he’s not edgy, gritty enough. He wants to be a popstar but doesn’t fit quite right ont hat category either. Pop-Rock? That’s the challenge for him. Though he’s not going anywhere, he may not win Idol if he doesn’t define himself well– soon enough!

Erika Van Pelt – “Heaven” by Bryan Adams
Beautiful voice. There’s something there but she was swallowed by the instruments…

Skylar Laine – “Love Sneakin’ Up On You” by Bonnie Raitt
Forgettable. Zzzzzzzzzz. Wake us up when her song is over.

Joshua Ledet – “When a Man Loves a Woman”
The best performance of the night! One of the best performances in the history of American Idol! Wow. Just wow. Goosebumps from beginning to end!! Incredible. Way to go Joshua!

Hollie Cavanagh – “The Power of Love” by Celine Dion
Hollie just added 15 years to her youth. Why is she singing this song?! What a step back from her previous performances! Too nasally towards the end too. Our least favorite!
